I hate when people jump on Tolkien’s dick for Eowyn marrying and forgoing fighting for a peaceful life, as if that makes her character any less feminist.

This is a woman who nearly died and suffered tremendously at the hands of the witch king (whom she killed). who watched her friends, family, and subjects get plowed down and brutally murdered in the battlefield. Who lost everything due to war.If anything, she made strong decision. She saw the evils of war and realized it’s something you do out of necessity rather than something that deserves to be glorified. Then she went and married a guy she chose and focused on how to help her people and community rather than how to kill. That’s some good decision making.
Say it with me kids. A women doesn’t need to fight to be strong.
Idk im seeing and hearing some dumb bullshit on my dash and in the tags, and it may be a minority of people, but it still gets at me. Eowyn was one of the first “warrior woman” to grace the pages of epic fantasy, and unlike a lot of them, she embodies a complete and whole strength. She’s an incredible fighter, but also a brillant and nurturing person with a good heart.

today I reblogged a post about eowyn, added a few virgin mary-style plays on eowyn’s titles to it, and tagged it #religion. I then spent some time thinking about why I love eowyn so much and how I think she relates to marian/holy mother archetypes.
also, today is the feast of the assumption of the virgin mary. I went to the 7:00 bilingual mass and while I was drifting in and out of the homily, I caught that the priest was asking (rhetorically) if the congregation had seen some movie or another. I figured it was some weird ~catholic~ movie and was about to drift back out again when I realized he wasn’t referencing “wings” but “lord of the rings”
and he started talking about how eowyn, niece of king theoden of rohan, takes the little hobbit merry on an adventure with her and slays the witch-king, who could be killed by no man; and how we are all the little hobbits, and eowyn is the virgin mary, there to guide us and defeat undefeatable evils for us.

I am going to go join a convent, since the universe is clearly trying to tell me something here
